What is Your Favorite Pro-Life Song?

Nick Alexander here... Within the past week, there has been a steady stream of pro-life oriented songs. These are the songs that speak of the different voices surrounding life issues, from artists as varied as soft contemporary to jazz-infused rap. There's songs of joy and regret, love and forgiveness, strength and struggle. I was raised in a home that, in short, did not share these views. In fact, my mother was very vocal in the "women's rights" movement, and oftentimes would march for "our bodies, our selves." As a teenager, I became a huge fan of Steve Taylor. Of all the Christian rock that I listened to in the mid-80s, none spoke more persuasively about the sanctity of life. Because of his tenacity of addressing this issue amongst many songs, I was able to understand the importance of taking a stand for life, at all stages. Life is a gift, and regardless of one's circumstances, one must never presume that taking a life would be a solution to whatever trial one is facing. Of all the songs in Steve Taylor's repertoire, I find that Lifeboat (off of On the Fritz) is a novelty track that hits this point home. It demonstrates the frivolousness of teaching "values clarification", and that life could be measured by accomplishments. And any song that reminds me of "Joan Collins" gets an automatic recommendation in my book. Do you have a pro-life song worth sharing? Share your comments below. Our society is hungry to know more of these songs...

"I was always a big fan of Taylor's "I Blew Up The Clinic Real Good." Catches the other side of the issue. Glad to hear his name bandied about." This was the song that pretty much undid his career... a lot of people failed to see the satirical bent in this song, as if he was actually promoting it. Or, it was an issue too sensitive, too dark, to make a novelty song about. A shame, really, coz it is a good song... but too many pro-lifers I shared it with, retracted with horror when I shared the song. ("Lifeboat", to be fair, does a lot of the same thing, but because it was framed as a sketch, I suppose, was far more accessible). Happy for me, Steve Taylor continued to appear in other forms, producing other artists and sharing co-writing with them... such as Guardian, the Newsboys, and Sixpence None the Richer. And he has since branched out to movie directing (which he had majored in at college). And he has become the influence of many other artists, such as "All Star United" and "Hokus Pick." Hopefully we'll continue to see more of his work. Nick Alexander The "Catholic Weird Al" http:\\www.nickalexander.com

"THIS IS MY BODY," written

"THIS IS MY BODY," written by Dana, is a favorite pro-life song of many. It was an honor for me to sing on the recording and video with Dana and Mark Girardin, who sang the part of Jesus. The song was written at Fr. Frank Pavone's (Priests for Life) urging. He saw how the words "This Is My Body" were used both by the pro-abortionists regarding power over the body, even to the point of killing another, AND by Jesus Christ, exemplifying perfect sacrifice of the body so that others may live. This song has aided in healing those who have had abortions, and it has powerfully changed people's opinions regarding the abortion issue. It is encouraging, dramatic, and beautiful.

Another great Steve Taylor

Another great Steve Taylor song is Baby Doe from the Meltdown album. Steve is my favorite songwriter and greatly influences the lyrics in the Critical Mass albums. I also have interviewed this artist and he has great respect for Catholics and the Catholic church. Just FYI... Check out http://www.sockheaven.net/press/interviews/dw_19960630/ for the interview

I have a really unique pro

I have a really unique pro life song. It's a conversation between an angel and unborn children. The angel tells the children about God and earth. The children want to see the world, and they want to know about reaching heaven. Hope you like the song! Here's the website, which features the composition as a music video: www.WeWantToSeeTheWorld.com Thanks!

Wow! This song really IS

Wow! This song really IS different. I love the way it was written, with the angel and unborn children singing back and forth. And how beautiful it is! This prolife song is definitely one of the best ever written, if not THE best!

I don't think it's hit the radio yet... http://www.aweband.com/lyrics-lyrics-a-previews/curse-of-blood I read the band's notes on this, and it was actually based on Sarah Palin's son Trig... pretty neat stuff. I love John Schlitt's song,

I love John Schlitt's song, "The Grafting". This beautiful ballad talks about an open adoption chosen by a caring, sensitive young woman and the reunion she has with the young man when he grows up and thanks her for giving him to a couple who loved him and helped him grow up.

Id be ablidged if anyone has

Id be ablidged if anyone has the artist or copy of the song chosen I remember using it in the late 80s and another song Miracle, Some of the words I remember in the song Chosen ie: Chosen you were chosen, blessed among women, chosen you were chosen to care for the life yourve been given. You must know it wont always be easy with the laughter there will also be tears. You must trust me you are chosen Ill be with you till the end. And I cant remember much about the song Miracle,

My favorite two pro-life

My favorite two pro-life songs are Blue Eyes Like Janeys by David Huff and Lucy by Skillet. Blue Eyes Like Janey's: We were so young, and only playin' around. I was ready for adventure, not for settling down. So when Janey told me she was pregnant, and that she wanted to be my wife, I said, "Wait a minute Janey. We're only seventeen. We're just starting out our young lives. Let's keep our heads together, girl. Let's look at all of the options." But we both knew what the choices were: There was "abortion" or "adoption." And the doctor we saw, he said it wasn't really life~ "It's just a formless mass of cells." So Janey and I, we made our choice and we promised we'd never tell. But leaving the clinic we heard some talk, and it shattered our little world. The doctor was telling the nurses that the baby was a girl. Would she have brown hair? Did she have blue eyes? I try to imagine what she would look like so many times. Would she be a tall girl? Oh, the questions haunt my mind. Would she have blue eyes like Janey's and brown hair like mine? I saw Janey just the other day in a Pro-Life Movement line. We were in front of the courthouse steps, praying and carrying signs. Janey came up to talk to me, and there were tears in her blue eyes. She said, "Twenty-six million innocent babies like ours have already died. And I can't stand on the sidelines anymore and watch that number grow. Not after what you and I've been through~not knowing what we know. I still wake up late some nights and think I heard her call my name. And I still have her photograph in an empty picture frame. Lucy: Hey Lucy, I remember your name I left a dozen roses on your grave today I'm in the grass on my knees, wipe the leaves away I just came to talk for a while I got some things I need to say Now that it's over I just wanna hold her I'd give up all the world to see That little piece of heaven looking back at me Now that it's over I just wanna hold her I've gotta live with the choices i made And I can't live with myself today Hey Lucy, I remembered your birthday They said it'd bring some closure to say your name I know I'd do it all different if I had the chance But all I got are these roses to give And they can't help me make amends Here we are, now you're in my arms I never wanted anything so bad Here we are, for a brand new start Living the life that we could've had Me and Lucy walking hand in hand Me and Lucy never wanna end Just another moment in your eyes I'll see you in another life In heaven where we never say goodbye Here we are, now you're in my arms Here we are for a brand new start Got to live with the choices I've made And I can't live with myself today Me and Lucy walking hand in hand Me and Lucy never wanna end Got to live with the choices I've made And I can't live with myself today Hey Lucy, I remember your name Quote from John Cooper (lead singer of band and author of song): "..this week is the very first time that I've ever told what this song is about, because, uh, it's very special to me, but I feel like it's time to talk about it a little bit, so.. listen up while I tell you a story about a young girl and a young guy who found themselves in a hard situation. They didn't know what to do when they found out that she was pregnant; they were young, they didn't have any money, they were scared, they didn't want to tell anybody, they didn't know what to do, and the only option that they could see was to terminate the pregnancy. So that's what they decided to do… they went to a clinic, they had the procedure done, and at first they felt relieved that all their problems had gone away. But then something happened that they did not expect… and that's over the next few weeks, which turned into a few months, they began to feel an intense sadness… and a pain and an agony and a guilt that wouldn't go away. They didn't know what to do, so they finally went to see a counselor; they said look - tell us what to do, we just don't know, and the counselor made a suggestion. The counselor said here's what you need to do - stop acting like you had a procedure, and act like you had a death in the family. So the couple went home and they made three decisions; number one, they decided to have a funeral service for the baby; number two, they bought a tiny little headstone; and they last decision to make was what to name the baby. After a couple weeks they finally decided they would call her… Lucy." I'm planning on using both those songs in the movie I'm gonna make.

Since we are listing Catholic

Since we are listing Catholic songs, the list should include music that could actually be used at Mass. Two extremely obvious choices are David Haas' "We Choose Life" and "Before I Was Born." Both songs are scriptural, well-written and they are available through GIA Publications in Chicago. I have used them for every Respect Life liturgy for the past decade.

Seals & Crofts' boldness

The famous pop/rock duo, Seals & Crofts, at the very height of their popularity, made one of the boldest moves in pop music history when they came out with their song "Unborn Child" in 1974.  Not only did they record this great pro-life song, but they even named the album "Unborn Child".

My favorite pro-life song is "Legal Kill", by King's X.  It's a very accessible ballad, done by some guys who often crank up the rock 'n roll.

Another great one is "What Was I Supposed to Be", by Acapella.
