Venerable Satoko Kitahara (1929-58) was born to an aristocratic Japanese family descended from samurai warriors. Raised in the Shinto religion, Satoko went to work in a factory when World War II broke out. After almost being killed, she became disillusioned with the war and her childhood faith and gradually converted to Catholicism. She attended college after the war, and, after graduating, devoted herself to those who were left in poverty after the conflict, even going to live with them in a slum called Ants Town. Satoko contracted tuberculosis and died in 1958. Pope Francis declared her Venerable in 2015.

Born to a wealthy family
Samurai slept in the background
Worked in a factory when the war broke out
Explosions came and then there was Light
No half-measures to your embrace
You found Him in the beggar's faces
And went to live with them in the ruins
Fell ill and were gone at twenty-five
Tokyo hardly remembers you
Built away slums but your soul remains
Now we work in ruins of the spirit
Help us to see His face like you did
