Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue

This poem by Mary Dixon Thayer was sometimes recited by Bp. Fulton Sheen.

I have been able to find two different melodies. One melody is set to the tune of "Glorification" which is taken from Gossner's "Choralbuch" Leipsig, 1832,  a German Melody.

The other melody is by Marie A. d'Invilliers otherwise known as Sister Camille Marie, R.S.M., a religious Sister of Mercy.

however the complete score is not available due to copyright restrictions. So I'm following up with the university.

While doing my research I came across a recording by the Ames Brothers on youTube.

The poster indicates the music and lyrics are by Frederic J. Nelson but I haven't had much success in finding the music, the verses are slightly different but the harmony is very nice.

As always, any help would be appreciated.

More information

I was doing a little more research and came across some new information. The Ames Brother's recording was released on a 78 rpm record under the CORAL label. Well interestingly enough the flip side of the record was “Mother At Your Feet Is Kneeling” https://www.45cat.com/record/960628

I also located a Find-a-Grave link for Fr. Nelson https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/14497590/frederic_j-nelson

I haven't come across any sheet music for the Ames recording.

I was given a copy of the music by Marie A. d'Invilliers otherwise known as Sister Camille Marie, R.S.M., a religious Sister of Mercy.

Need an engraving of the Ames recording?

Don, do you need an engraving of the Ames recording? André and I can help.

Father Nelson

Richard, it turns out that a friend of mine who lives in Wesport, Massachusettes has several magazines that were published by Fr. Nelson.  He also made records and tapes.

"He established a conclave at Powers Lake, North Dakota, and had a following which included traditional nuns.  He published a magazine which was very traditional.  He advocated for the Latin Mass, traditional hymns, and traditional Catholic practices.  I think they were probably "out of the church," but I can't say for sure. They had a publishing company.  I learned some hymns I did not know from his records.  I am pretty sure there is nothing left at Powers Lake nowadays.  Try a YouTube or Google search of Powers Lake.  It must have been controversial.  The nuns had some dogs (4 I think).  They were beautiful German Shepherds as I recall and some crazy person (the devil) poisoned them.  It was very sad.  I have a large box of the magazine this group published, Mary Faithful.  I have had them all these years (at least 35) and have never looked at more than a couple of them, even though they are very interesting.  There must be at least 70 or 80 of them.  His records were called "Marycords."

Let me look through the magazines and see if they have any music in them before you ask
André van Haren create an arrangement.

My friend is recuperating from surgery so it will likely be next year before I get anything.

Searching for Mary songs

Searching for Mary songs – almost as fun as "searching for life forms."

I enjoy your sleuthing. Hopefully you will find that song arrangement. I wonder if record companies like Decca Records keep ancient scores on file – either in original hard copy or digitized.

If you come up dry on your search, I might be able to have André van Haren create an arrangement for you, similar to what he did for "Act of Contrition."

AMES BROTHERS, FOUR JEWISH MEN, MAKE "LOVELY LADY" RECORDING; IT'S A NATIONAL HIT

MANDAN, N.D., Aug. 2 (NC) – Four Jewish youths perhaps have done more than anyone else to make a hymn dedicated to the Blessed Mother more widely known throughout the country. They are the Ames Brothers--Ed, Vic, Gene and Joe--a quartet popular on stage, radio and television, who have recorded "Lovely Lady Dressed In Blue" for Coral-Decca records. Sale of the records is brisk and may surpass the Brothers best-seller "Undecided" record.

"Lovely Lady Dressed In Blue" is a poem written by Mary Dixon Thayer. It frequently has been recited on radio by Bishop Pulton j. Sheen, Auxiliary of New York and national director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

The Rev. Fred Nelson, 28, convert and assistant pastor of St. Joseph's Church here, whose hobby is picking out tunes on the piano, set the poem to music. Father Nelson said he had "written lots of songs but they've never amounted to much." He sent his music for the poem to the Antonian Publishers, Portland, Oreg. They made a record of the song by John Kontos, Bismarck, N.D., boy soprano, which met with limited success.

Father Nelson said he first heard the Ames Brothers recording of his hymn on the radio. He commented: "I think they do a beautiful Job of it. It is a reverent song and should be done with feeling. It's not the swingy type and I hope anyone who plays it remembers that."

The singing brothers sent Father Nelson a letter, complimenting him on the song, and a picture of themselves. Father Nelson said he hasn't heard anything about royalties from the record and added "I certainly can use any money the tune earns."

The Ames Brothers were bom and raised in Malden, Mass., a suburb of Boston, They have been singing as a quartet since their grammar school days and were prize-winners in many amateur contests in the Boston area. They have appeared in a number of television and radio shows and on the stage. Usually, they conclude their act with a serious number, sometimes a spiritual. Now, they often use the “Lovely Lady" number for their closing.
