I saw a woman wand’ring in the desert
Just outside the city line
I called out to her from a distance
To where she walked with a torch as dusk fell
When I got close I saw her skin was blistered
I asked if she needed help
She said she was happy to be there
As she left bloody footprints in the sand
She said the city had been too cruel to her
Time there made her run away
She felt better out in the wild
But her cracked lips were bleeding when she spoke
It seems to me you may be hurting out here
I said as twilight deepened
I am just fine she said with a scowl
And I’m never going back to that place
Then she turned and walked farther from the city
And past her I saw others
Spread out, sad torches in the desert
I called to them but they wouldn’t listen
